Japan Rail Pass Set For Major Price Hike

As of October 1, 2023, Japan Rail Pass is scheduled to undergo a dramatic price increase, projected at approximately 70%, thus making the pass significantly less cost-effective than its current standing. On July 26, more details about the changes to the pass were released.

Besides the significant price adjustment, the pass will also introduce some slight modifications: pass holders will now be able to access Nozomi and Mizuho trains by paying an additional substantial fee, and avail discounts at certain tourist destinations. The old pass will continue to be on sale until September 30, and can theoretically be used until early 2024.

Change1: Price Increase

Despite the price hike, the pass remains an appealing option for those who find value in its unlimited ride provision and the convenience of hopping on trains without purchasing individual tickets.

Change2: Access to Nozomi/Mizuho Trains

Currently, Japan Rail Pass holders are unable to ride Nozomi (the fastest and frequently operated train on the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen) and Mizuho (the fastest train on the Sanyo/Kyushu Shinkansen). For the new pass, they will now have the option to ride these trains by purchasing an additional ticket.

Change3: Discounts on the use of tourist facilities in Japan

The new pass will also offer holders discounts at select tourist spots and shops, with more details to be released towards the end of September.

Validity of the Old Pass

If you purchase your pass on September 30 through the JR Pass official website, you can still utilize the old rail pass from late October 2023 until November at the latest because you are required to set a commencement date for your pass within a month from the date of purchase.

If you purchase the pass through Amnet, you receive a voucher that must be exchanged for the actual pass within three months from the date of purchase in Japan. When exchanging the voucher, you can set a start date within one month. Meaning, if you purchase the pass on September 30, you can theoretically exchange the voucher in late December and set a start date for late January 2024.
