On November 26, 2024, the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) has released its 4th and final autumn foliage forecast for 2024. Covering over 700 viewing locations and 2,700 mountain sites, this comprehensive forecast spans from Hokkaido to Kagoshima and includes both red leaves (maples) and yellow leaves (ginkgo trees).

Weather Impact on the Foliage Season

Due to record-high temperatures across Japan in September through November—and continued mild weather forecast for December—this year’s autumn foliage is significantly delayed nationwide. In fact, Tokyo's red leaves are forecast for around December 5, tying the latest record on file, while Osaka’s is projected for December 9, later than usual. Cities like Utsunomiya and Nagano are expected to see red leaves more than two weeks behind normal timing.

Out of 51 cities with official benchmark trees, 11 cities are forecast to reach their latest red foliage on record, and 5 cities are expected to tie previous records. Overall, this is shaping up to be one of the most delayed foliage years in recorded history. Yellow leaves are also delayed in most regions, especially in western and northern Japan.
