A 5-Day Immersive Experience Curated by Amnet

Discover Shikoku: A New Hidden Japan Journey

As travelers seek deeper, more meaningful encounters with Japan, Shikoku has emerged as one of the country’s most compelling Hidden Japan destinations. Rich in spiritual heritage, dramatic landscapes, and living traditions, this island offers a quieter, more intimate side of Japan—far from the usual tourist routes.

Amnet is proud to introduce a 5-day curated journey through Upper Shikoku, thoughtfully designed to connect you with the land, its people, and its enduring spirit.

Day 1 | The Pilgrimage Begins: Spiritual Roots of Shikoku

Your journey begins at Ryozen-ji Temple, the first temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. This sacred site has marked the starting point for pilgrims for centuries, offering a window into the history and spiritual culture that still shapes the island today.

From there, visit Matsuura Brewery, where local sake reflects the region’s pure water, climate, and agricultural rhythms. Through tasting and storytelling, you’ll discover how nature’s gifts are woven into everyday life.

The day concludes with a stay at Anraku-ji Temple, a traditional pilgrim lodging. In the evening, you are invited to participate in a Buddhist service alongside the monks. The quiet atmosphere and simple temple life create space to slow down, reflect, and gently reset both body and mind.

Day 2 | Iya Valley: Life in Harmony with Nature

In the remote Iya Valley, nature and daily life remain deeply intertwined. Begin with a scenic boat ride through Oboke Gorge, where sheer cliffs and crystal-clear waters reveal the valley’s dramatic terrain.

Next, enjoy a hands-on soba-making experience at Tsuzuki Shoten, guided by a local grandmother affectionately known as “Iya no Obaachan.” Using traditional methods and freshly foraged mountain vegetables, you’ll share a meal that reflects the simplicity and generosity of the region.

In the afternoon, explore the Ochiai Village, recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Site. Here, steep mountain slopes are home to age-old farming practices and timeless rural architecture.

Your accommodation offers sweeping mountain views, reached by cable car descending into the valley. Relax in an open-air bath as the surrounding peaks quiet the day.

Day 3 | West Iya & Konpira: Faith, Community, and the Sea

Visit Shigematsu Hamlet in West Iya, once a thriving community and still home to families who have lived here for generations. On a private terrace overlooking the mountains, enjoy a hands-on green tea and roasted hojicha experience.

A gentle walk through the hills leads to small mountain shrines dedicated to local deities, offering insight into folk beliefs that continue to shape everyday life.

Later, travel to Kotohira Shrine (Konpira-san), a pilgrimage long considered a once-in-a-lifetime journey. The climb up its stone steps is both physical and meditative—a gradual transition from the ordinary world into sacred space. Along the approach, a historic temple town unfolds, preserving the energy and hospitality once offered to pilgrims.

Overnight in Urashima Village or NIPPONIA Nio, where restored architecture and local storytelling reflect the warmth of a Setouchi coastal town.

Day 4 | Community Pride & Sakura Panorama

Begin the day at Zentsu-ji Temple, the birthplace of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), founder of Shingon Buddhism. Walking its peaceful grounds offers deeper understanding of Shikoku’s spiritual foundation.

Continue to Chichibugahama Beach, now famous for its mirror-like reflections at sunset. Beyond its beauty lies a powerful story—this beach was restored by local residents after years of neglect, a testament to community pride and care.

Stroll through Nio’s nostalgic streets, visiting long-standing candy shops and bakeries that capture the rhythm of everyday life.

In the afternoon, ascend Mt. Shiude, one of Shikoku’s most breathtaking cherry blossom viewpoints. From the summit, enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the Seto Inland Sea dotted with islands—an unforgettable blend of nature and season.

Enjoy matcha in a serene Japanese setting before visiting Ritsurin Garden, where pine trees and landscaped ponds form one of Japan’s most celebrated gardens.

End the journey with a cycling experience between Pilgrimage Temples No. 81 and 82, passing through forested paths in the Goshikidai area. Forest bathing and quiet temples nestled among trees provide a peaceful conclusion to your Shikoku journey.
