Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast 2026: When and Where to See the Blooms

The 2026 cherry blossom season is expected to arrive on schedule in western Japan, on time to slightly early in eastern Japan, and slightly to significantly earlier than usual in northern Japan.

Tokyo is forecast to kick off the season on March 21, followed by Yokohama on March 22, and Kumamoto, Fukuoka, Gifu, Nagoya, and Kofu on March 23. Cherry blossoms will continue to open across western and eastern Japan through early April, with the Tohoku region expected to see its first blooms in early to mid-April. The cherry blossom front (sakura zensen) is predicted to reach Hokkaido in late April.

What's behind this year's forecast?

During the first half of winter, Japan experienced periodic winter pressure patterns, which helped trigger dormancy release (kyumin daha) for cherry blossom buds—particularly in eastern and northern Japan. In western Japan, cold spells didn't last as long, potentially delaying this process. However, with colder temperatures expected through late January, dormancy release should progress on schedule across the country.
