Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast

Nothing is more exciting than seeing the first signs of spring after a long cold winter. Springtime in Japan is a tableau of dreamlike scenes. The blossoms of Japan's iconic sakura (cherry blossoms) light up with their delicate pink glow, attracting tourists and locals alike.

Cherry Blossom Forecast 2025

On January 23, 2025, the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) released its second cherry blossom forecast for the year, predicting flowering and full bloom dates for the "Someiyoshino" variety across approximately 1,000 locations nationwide.

According to JMC, this season's flowering is expected to align with average trends, despite a delay in the dormancy-breaking period (休眠打破) due to warmer-than-average temperatures in late 2024. However, elevated temperatures following dormancy are anticipated to encourage steady bud growth.

The forecast highlights the following key dates for cherry blossom viewing:

  • Kochi, Fukuoka, and Kagoshima: Flowering is expected to begin around March 23, with Kochi and Fukuoka blooming one day later than average, while Kagoshima is predicted to flower three days earlier.

  • Tokyo: Flowering is forecast for March 24, consistent with historical averages, with peak bloom arriving approximately a week later.

  • Osaka: Blossoms are predicted to open by March 26, with full bloom around early April.

  • Hokkaido (Sapporo): The colder climate in northern Japan means Sapporo's cherry blossoms will appear later, with flowering anticipated around April 30 and full bloom by early May.

While December temperatures returned to average, January through March 2025 is forecast to experience above-average warmth in Eastern Japan. For Western Japan, January and February will see average temperatures, while March is expected to be warmer. These conditions suggest that flowering will occur on time or slightly later than average in these regions.

  • Northern Japan
Higher-than-average temperatures in October and November 2024 similarly delayed dormancy breaking by approximately a week.
